My Story - How I Scale Up As A Piano Teacher

In 2019 I was pregnant with my first child and teaching 50 hours a week in my own private studio and at a local college. 

At that point, I had been teaching private piano lessons for 13 years and I had DONE IT ALL. 

❌ Driven to people’s houses to give piano lessons because I thought that this was what I had to do to charge a premium price for piano lessons… (it’s not).

❌ Taught students I didn’t want to teach because I ‘needed the money’ even though I felt completely depleted after their lessons and knew it wasn’t good for me.

❌ Squeezed in makeup lessons whenever I had time because I thought my ‘free time’ was up for grabs in my business….(it’s not). 

I was EXHAUSTED to the BONE. 

And to be honest, I was doing a lot of things that I knew deep down I didn’t want to do. 

👉🏼 I was teaching during the ‘after school hours’ (from 3-8 pm) even though I knew that eventually when my child went to school, that would be the prime time for us to spend together and I didn’t want to be teaching those hours. 

👉🏼 My schedule and income were changing constantly based on when students could make it to their lessons and when they had to cancel. 

👉🏼 I was capped at how much money I could make. I had done the math and it seemed like the only way to make more money was to teach more hours…

My brain had NO IDEA how to conceptualize being able to make more money without working during the after school hours or without being beholden to my students’ schedules. 

I knew deep down that I wanted to own a successful business that provided for me and my family financially, without having to work 50+ hours a week. 

When the pandemic hit, I started streamlining, kind of by accident.

But what I didn’t realize at that point is that the changes I was making were going to get me exactly where I wanted to be.

✅ I moved my entire business online and never went back.

✅I invested in a business course that taught me how to streamline and optimize.

✅I raised my rates significantly [almost doubled them actually] with one month’s notice and only had one student quit. 

✅ I implemented some systems to save me time...I kid you not, up until that point I was literally writing individual emails every month to tell students the total amount of money that they owed 🤯 SO NOT A GOOD USE OF MY TIME).

✅ I stopped offering makeup lessons.

✅ I switched to a subscription-based billing model and automated billing. 

The immediate results? 

🎉 I had more time and more creative energy (I wasn’t wasting my time with archaic tasks like individual billing for students).

🎉 ​​I had the creative mental bandwidth (and some things that operated without me in my business) to hire 2 additional teachers.

🎉 I had time to be benevolent in my business and opened up a scholarship spot in my studio.

I was not constantly depleted and I actually had MORE TO GIVE to the people I was teaching. I was serving at a much higher level.

This freed up even more time and gave me a small taste of some passive income. 

The results? 

🎉 I had the creative energy to start a Youtube channel in August of 2021. 

Not even a year later I launched Casual to Confident Piano Player - a TRULY scalable group program that has allowed me to:

Work 25-30 hours a week and double my income. 

The best part is that I LOVE WHAT I DO. My business feeds me and fulfills me.

👊 I no longer have days where I get done teaching and feel like I have nothing left to give. 

👊 I get to help so many more people than I did before and with significantly more IMPACT.

👊 I have an amazing community of people that are as excited to learn as I am to teach. 

👊 I only work with my ideal client now. 

👊 My business is completely scalable and flexible - I can literally mold it into anything I want. 

And on the backend for a while now…I’ve been teaching other piano teachers how to do this for their business as well.
